Medical Delta program CARES at the first Dutch Biomedical Optics meeting

The consortium of the Medical Delta program ‘Cancer Diagnostics for Sustainable Care (CARES)’ attended the first Dutch Biomedical Optics meeting, which took place on 18 and 19 June 2026 at the TechMed Centre of the University of Twente.

Scientific presentations were given by Loes Ettema (from the Menzel group at TU Delft) on “Nerve fiber mapping on brain tissue surfaces using backscattered light imaging” and by Hamed Abbasi (Erasmus MC) on “The Added Value of Raman Spectroscopy in Fluorescence-Guided Cancer Surgery”. Jeroen Kalkman (TU Delft) presented the latest results from his group on “3D digital pathology with optical diffraction tomography”. Arjan Lock (The Hague University of Applied Sciences) presented a poster on “First steps in the development of a visible/NIR and SWIR multispectral imager for the detection of suspicious skin lesions”.

Optics and photonics

This Dutch Biomedical Optics meeting was the first in an annual series of events aimed at bringing together researchers working on optics and photonics (medical diagnostics and tissue analysis using advanced light-based technologies) within biology and medicine. The two-day event attracted more than 90 participants: researchers, clinicians, and industry representatives from biomedical engineering, technical medicine, applied physics, and clinical practice.
