Young Medical Delta Hackathon: a win for using arts and culture to promote health

Thursday, October 30, 2025

Five teams fully devoted themselves last Saturday during the Young Medical Delta Hackathon 2025 to challenging cases within the Medical Delta pillars of Care, Prevention, Transformation, and Sustainability & Greening.

The hackathon took place at Loft Studio Delft. Various program leaders and coordinators from Medical Delta prepared a case for the participants to work on. The program leaders were present to present their case, answer questions, and contribute ideas during the teams’ brainstorming sessions.

The cases the teams worked on were:

  • Case 1 (Healthcare 1): Blended Care as Normality for Rehabilitation Care
Case leaders: Lian van Amerongen and Annemarie de Brabander
This case focused on finding a creative and sustainable way to continuously motivate healthcare professionals to embrace blended care—the combination of digital and physical care—as a natural, attractive, and valuable part of their work, thereby improving both care quality and job satisfaction.
  • Case 2 (Healthcare 2): City-wide Access to Assistive Technology
Case leaders: Luc de Witte and Charlotte Krom
This case revolved around developing an inclusive and practical approach to make assistive devices and supportive technologies more visible, understandable, and accessible for older residents of The Hague, with the goal of helping them live independently longer and reducing pressure on formal healthcare.
  • Case 3 (Prevention): Artistic/Cultural Healthcare Innovation
    Case leader: Julia Peters
The focus was on developing inclusive art and cultural interventions that enhance mental, social, and physical wellbeing, reduce stress, and foster connection, with special attention to vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups and collaboration with local networks and organizations.
  • Case 4 (Sustainability): Improving the Endoscopy Department EMC
    Case leader: Ceyda Isci
This case aimed to find creative and feasible ways to make the endoscopy department of Erasmus MC more sustainable by reducing waste, promoting reuse, and optimizing energy and water use, with attention to behavior, awareness, and collaboration between healthcare professionals and patients.
  • Case 5 (Transformation): Connecting Communities for (Health)Care
    Case leader: Veronica Janssen
This case focused on developing digital solutions that connect families, neighborhoods, and informal caregivers to distribute care responsibilities more fairly and strengthen mutual support and connectedness within the community.

Art as Medicine

The participants were divided into interdisciplinary teams, with members coming from various institutions and backgrounds, both clinical and technological. Throughout the day, the teams collaborated on their solutions, which they presented at the end of the day to the other participants and an expert jury. The jury consisted of Prof. Dr. Frank Willem Jansen (former Chair of Medical Delta), Prof. Ir. Jenny Dankelman (Medical Delta Professor), and Amar Levens (Chair of Young Medical Delta).

The team for Case 3 — Artistic/Cultural Healthcare Innovation, consisting of Anne-Wil van Werkhoven, Atadila Belva Ganya, Maratun Nabila, and Sheefa Bin Sofi — was announced as the winner. They convinced the jury with their creative and well-founded approach within the theme of Artistic/Cultural Healthcare Innovation, using art and culture as innovative tools to promote health and wellbeing.

The day can be looked back on as a successful and well-attended event, where young professionals, researchers, and students from diverse backgrounds collaboratively developed innovative solutions for current challenges in healthcare. This made the Young Medical Delta Hackathon 2025 a valuable experience.
