BBC article on Amir Zadpoor’s search for a bone substitute

The BBC has published an in-depth article on the quest by a research team from Delft University of Technology and the LUMC to find the best material for hip prostheses. Medical Delta professor prof. dr. ir. Amir Zadpoor (Delft University of Technology, LUMC) explains how machine learning and AI are helping to advance the research.

Zadpoor was looking for a material that defies the laws of nature: it had to become thicker when stretched and, at the same time, be as hard as bone. The material was needed to develop an alternative to the hip prostheses currently in use: these wear out over time and then need to be replaced.

They identified a set of requirements for designing a suitable material and were assisted in this by Artificial Intelligence. Zadpoor and other researchers from TU Delft discuss this in detail in a BBC article.
